When My Sistah Wins We All Win - Dr. Athea Vanzant 'The Essence Of Poetry'
Wednesday Oct 09, 2024
Wednesday Oct 09, 2024
In this episode, I'm honored to have the amazing Dr. Athea Vanzant joining us today. I must say, this Sistah is something special! She's a published author, poet, mental health advocate, an educator, and just an all-around inspiring individual. She's using her God's given gifts to make a real difference in people's lives each and everyday.
As we sat down we discussed all kinds of things in this episode, from her childhood growing up in the church to her journey as a poet. Dr. Vanzant -aka- Essence has a beautiful way with words – she calls it the dichotomy of "soft and strong," and let me tell you, it's powerful stuff. She's even written two incredible books, "47 Seconds" - a collection of love poems that'll tug at your heartstrings - and "Parenting, Anxiety and Little Ones," a 31-day Journal to help parents navigate these challenging times.
We also dove into something that's really close to Dr. Vanzant's heart 'Mental Health Advocacy.' She's doing some incredible work to reduce the stigma, increase access to resources, and support folks who are struggling. She's even the Director of Mental Health and Wellness for the Galaxy of Poets, an organization doing amazing things in the community. We talked about all of that, plus some exciting events she's got coming up, like her annual "Essence of Poetry" show and her mental health retreat that sounds absolutely incredible.

Monday Oct 07, 2024
Monday Oct 07, 2024
In this episode, I take you on a journey—a personal one—where I reflect on how divine intervention and mentorship have shaped my life in ways I never fully realized until recently. You know, sometimes we go through life so focused on our goals that we forget to look back and see how far we’ve come. Well, that’s what happened to me when I stumbled upon an old yearbook, which took me back to a pivotal time in my life. I want to share that moment with you and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
Today we look back on about one of the most influential figures in my life: my middle school teacher, Mr. Bradley. He wasn’t just a teacher—he was a mentor, a guide, and in many ways, an angel that God placed in my path. Mr. Bradley saw potential in me that I didn’t even see in myself He changed my life's direction. His advice about using basketball as a tool, rather than letting it use me, completely changed my outlook everything going forward. I’m excited to dive deep into how his mentorship steered me not just in sports, but in my professional journey as well. He was truly my Guardian Angel!!!
We’ll also explore how God works in mysterious ways, guiding us even when we don’t realize it. From my time on the basketball court to my current career in IT, I’ve come to understand that the doors that opened for me were all part of a bigger plan. Sometimes, we don’t understand why certain things happen until we reflect on them later, and that’s a powerful realization I want to share with you all. I hope this episode inspires you to recognize the angels in your life and the doors that are waiting for you to walk through.
So, grab your headphones, get ready, and let’s dive into this reflection on faith, mentorship, and the unexpected ways life guides us. Whether you’re navigating your own challenges, looking for inspiration, or just curious about the twists and turns of my journey, I know you’ll take something valuable away from this conversation. Trust me, this is one episode you won’t want to miss!

When My Sistah Wins We All Win - Breast Cancer Awareness PSA
Wednesday Oct 02, 2024
Wednesday Oct 02, 2024
In this episode, I'm getting personal with y'all. I'm sharing how cancer has touched my life and the lives of those so dear to each of us. From my grandmother's battle with cancer to friends currently fighting breast cancer, and even those who've come out victorious on the other side - I've seen it all. But don't you worry, this isn't just a heavy episode. It's about hope, strength, , information, and the power of our community coming together.
I'm breaking down the facts for you. Did you know breast cancer can affect people as young as their 20s? That's right, and it's why I'm stressing the importance of early detection. We're talking self-exams, mammograms, and why you shouldn't let fear keep you from getting checked out. I'm even giving you a rundown of what to expect from doctor visits to potential treatments. Knowledge is power. Here's a few status from Susan G. Komen Foundation :
Black women in the U.S. face significant challenges regarding breast cancer, despite having a lower overall incidence rate compared to non-Hispanic white women. As of January 2021, about 361,000 Black women were breast cancer survivors or living with breast cancer. Notably, Black women tend to be diagnosed at a younger median age (61) compared to non-Hispanic white women (65). The mortality rate for Black women is approximately 37% higher than for white women, although it has been declining by about 1% per year from 2018 to 2022. Survival rates for non-Hispanic Black women (84% 5-year relative survival) lag behind those of non-Hispanic white women (93%). Factors contributing to these disparities include differences in tumor biology, later stage at diagnosis, barriers to high-quality healthcare, and higher rates of certain risk factors. Encouragingly, Black women had higher rates of screening mammography in 2021 compared to other women, which may help in earlier detection and improved outcomes.
Now, let me speak directly to our community for a minute. We face higher risks and often get diagnosed later. That's why I'm putting extra emphasis on the importance of regular check-ups and self-screenings for us. We've got to look out for each other, you feel me? This episode is all about encouraging you to take charge of your health, and reminding you that you're not alone in this fight.

Motivational Monday - The Power of Being Honest About Your Struggles
Monday Sep 30, 2024
Monday Sep 30, 2024
Today's episode is not your typical Motivational Monday, but I believe there's strength in vulnerability and power in sharing our struggles. I open up about receiving some heavy news today. Hearing about the passing of NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo hit me hard. I didn't know him personally, but I saw him at countless events around Atlanta. His passing is a stark reminder of life's fragility.
Later, I joined a prayer call with my home church in New York. It was uplifting, but as we wrapped up, I got a text that a close friend had a stroke. He's like a brother to me, and the news left me unsettled. Shortly after, I received an obituary for a young man knew. The weight of these events was overwhelming, and it made me reflect on the importance of being truthful and transparent about our feelings.
We all go through tough times, and it's crucial to express ourselves rather than bottle things up. I hope by sharing my experiences, it encourages you to be open about whatever you are going through. Find someone you can confide in, whether it's a friend, mentor, or professional. Prioritize your health and well-being, and remember to pray for your loved ones. If you ever need someone to talk to, reach out to me. Thank you for listening today. Remember, you're not alone, and it's okay to be transparent about your feelings.

You'll hear how I managed to learn the shaved icy business, complete with long lines of customers and even having my first "employees." This experience taught me invaluable lessons about work ethic, delegation, and the importance of working smarter, not harder.
But this episode isn't just about my story - it's about the power of instilling these skills in our youth. I'll share my thoughts on why it's crucial to teach our kids about business and self-reliance from an early age. Wind Down Wednesday - What Would You Title Your Autobiography?
Wednesday Sep 25, 2024
Wednesday Sep 25, 2024
In this episode of Cousin Ed's Corner, I'm getting real with you about life, family, and the power of sharing our stories. It all started with a conversation I had with my dad about being prepared for life's uncertainties. You know how it is - those heavy talks that make you stop and think about what really matters.
But here's where it gets interesting, fam. My son EJ, who's off at college now, surprised me with this dope gift - a "Family Keepsake Journal. Dad, I Want To Hear Your Story" Now, I'll be honest, it caught me off guard. It's probably the first time he's sent me something without asking for anything in return! But jokes aside, it got me thinking about the importance of documenting our lives and passing down our stories to the next generation.
Throughout the show, I'm sharing some of the questions from this journal and giving you a peek into my own story. I'm talking about my Brooklyn roots, my favorite childhood memories (like cooking breakfast for my grandmother), and some of the best advice my parents ever gave me. And let me tell you, some of these memories shaped the man you know today as Cousin ED!
I'm challenging you, my listeners, to think about your own life stories. "What Would You Title Your Autobiography? What memories and lessons do you want to pass down to your family? I believe we all have a unique story to tell, and it's up to us to make sure it's heard.
So tune in, get inspired:

Friday Sep 20, 2024
In this episode of Cousin Ed's Corner, I'm diving deep into the heart of faith, gratitude, and God's Perfect Timing. I open up about the importance of Thanking God not just on Fridays (TGIF), but every single day of our lives. Through personal anecdotes and heartfelt reflections, I remind you that even in our most challenging moments, there's always something to be grateful for.
I speak about the transformative power of gospel music. We explore how the lyrics of timeless hymns and contemporary gospel songs often spring from real-life experiences of pain, hope, and divine intervention. If we just pay closer attention to the words, we may find comfort and inspiration in the shared experiences of faith expressed through music.
One of the key thing to always remember is to celebrate others' blessings. I challenge you to shift your perspective from asking "Why not me?" to genuinely rejoicing in the good fortune of others. I explain how this attitude of selfless joy can actually prepare our hearts for the blessings God has in store for us, reminding you that when God blesses others, He's showing us a preview of what He can do in our own lives.

Thank God For Everything (TGIF) - The Reason Why We Thank God For Everything
Friday Sep 13, 2024
Friday Sep 13, 2024
In this episode, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the importance of gratitude and faith. Life moves fast, and sometimes we forget to Thank God for the simple things, like waking up in the morning, breathing, or just having another day to live. I’ve realized that we often focus on Thanking God only for the big wins, but we’ve got to appreciate the small blessings too. From Monday to Sunday, from the big victories to the tiny joys, God deserves our thanks for every single moment. That’s what I wanted to focus on today—Thanking God For Everything
As I look back on this podcast journey, I’m filled with gratitude. It’s been over ten years since I've started podcasting, and I honestly never thought we’d come this far. It all started with my cousin Mr. Moody encouraging me to get into podcasting, and here we are, still going strong. I Thank God for everyone who has tuned in and supported this community. You all are a part of this journey, and I feel so blessed to have a platform where we can connect, share stories, and uplift one another. Without you, none of this would be possible.
I also touched on the importance of divine timing. We may want things to happen our way and on our schedule, but God’s timing is always perfect. I’ve learned that even when things don’t go as planned, there’s a reason for it. Sometimes, what we want just isn’t for us, or maybe it’s not meant for us at that moment. But through patience and faith, we can trust that what’s meant for us will come in God’s time. It’s not always easy, but learning to trust in His plan brings a sense of peace.
Finally, I talked about the power of faith in everyday life. Whether you’re feeling lonely, struggling, or facing uncertainty, remember that God is always with you. He’s got your back. I truly believe that when we stay connected to our faith, we find strength in the toughest times. And part of that faith is not just keeping blessings for ourselves but sharing them with others. When we give back and bless others, we open ourselves up to even more blessings. That’s how God works, and it’s something I try to live by every day.
Remember: no matter what life throws your way, always remember to count your blessings and be thankful. And hey, if you enjoyed today's show, don't forget to share it with your friends and family! In this episode, I'm diving deep into the importance of community in shaping our children's lives. From teachers to coaches, family members to mentors, I'm shouting out everyone who plays a part in guiding our youth. I'm sharing personal stories, insights, and a whole lot of love for those unsung heroes who make a difference every day.
But it's not just about my kids – it's about all of our kids. I'm challenging each of you, to think about how you can give back to the young people in your community. Whether it's volunteering, mentoring, or just being there to listen, every little bit counts.
Remember raising a child is one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences. It’s often said that "It Takes A Village" to raise a child, and that couldn’t be more accurate.

In this episode, I'm taking you on a journey through the history of labor rights, shouting out the heroes who fought for better working conditions, and even sharing some personal stories from my own work experiences. From my first gig as a newspaper delivery boy to real first paystub, I'm laying it all out there to show how these experiences shaped my work ethic.
Also let take a moment to celebrate the contributions of figures like Cesar Chavez, who advocated for farmworkers' rights, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who supported the sanitation workers' strike. Their work has had a lasting impact on labor laws and the rights of all workers (yes that's you), not just on this holiday, but every day. Recognizing the value of hard work and supporting fair labor practices are essential for a healthy, productive society.
But that's not all, family. I want to hear from you too! I'm inviting all of you to share your own job stories – the good, the bad, and the downright funny. We're building a community here at Cousin Ed's Corner, and your voices are what make it special. So tune in, get motivated, and let's celebrate the hard work we all put in every day.
