When My Sistah Wins We All Win - ft. Laverne Mickens 'Debunking The Scholarship Myth'
Wednesday Jul 31, 2024
Wednesday Jul 31, 2024
In this latest episode of Cousin Ed's Corner, I sat down with the amazing Laverne Mickens, also known as the "Scholarship College Mama," and let me tell you, this woman is a goldmine of knowledge when it comes to securing free money for education.
Laverne shared her incredible story of helping her five children secure over $3 million in scholarships and grants. Can you believe that? She broke down some common myths about scholarships and revealed that there's money out there for everyone - from elementary school kids to PhD candidates. We talked about where to find these opportunities, how to apply, and why it's never too early (or too late) to start looking.
What I love about Laverne is that she's not just talking the talk - she's walking the walk. She offers services to help families navigate the scholarship process, from personalized scholarship lists to essay editing. And get this - she even shared some free resources during our today's show So whether you're a parent, a student, or just someone interested in furthering your education without breaking the bank, this episode is a must-listen.

Motivational Monday - They Not Like Us: Jeremiah 29:11
Monday Jul 22, 2024
Monday Jul 22, 2024
In this episode of Motivational Monday episode, I'm diving deep into a topic that's been weighing on my heart lately: the struggle of accepting that our friends, loved ones, especially our children, might not be carbon copies of us.
I'm opening up about my own experiences as a parent, particularly as my son prepares to head off to college. We'll explore the delicate balance between pushing our kids to excel and allowing them to forge their own paths. I'll share some powerful scripture that's been helping me navigate these choppy waters, including a defining verse from Jeremiah that's given me a new perspective on God's plan for each of us.
But this isn't just about parenting – we'll also talk about how this "They Not Like Us" mentality affects our friendships, our communities, and even our view of political figures. I'm serving up some food for thought with a special "marinating" metaphor that I think you'll find both entertaining and insightful. So come on over to Cousin Ed's Corner, where we're keeping it real, keeping it positive, and always striving to grow together.

Wind Down Wednesday - "Using Control, Alt, and Delete to Reset Your Mindset"
Wednesday Jul 17, 2024
Wednesday Jul 17, 2024
In this episode, I'm breaking down how we can use Control-Alt-Delete to change our life. I speak about a recent work trip and how seeing a sign hanging outside an IT Director's office changed my thinking. It featured the familiar IT commands "Ctrl+Alt+Del," but with a twist: each command was accompanied by a life lesson—Control Yourself, Alter Your Thinking, and Delete Negativity. This simple yet profound poster sparked a thought process about how these concepts could be applied to personal growth.
We're talking about Controlling Yourself (yeah, I know, I'm still working on the Brooklyn in me), Altering your thinking to see the silver lining in every situation, and straight up Deleting all that negativity that's holding you back. I'm keeping it real and sharing some personal stories about how I've been applying this in my own life.
But listen up, this ain't just about me. I want to hear from you too! How are you controlling yourself? How do you alter your thinking when life throws you a curveball? And most importantly, how are you deleting that negativity? Hit me up on social media, leave a voicemail, or shoot me a text. Let's grow together and build this community stronger than ever. Oh, and don't forget - we've got a special Financial Freedom Friday coming up, so make sure you tune in for that too. It's gonna be lit!

Friday Jun 28, 2024
In this episode of Cousin Ed's Corner, I discussed the importance of supporting our black businesses, particularly entrepreneurs and many of our content creators. I shared my personal experiences with podcasting, emphasizing the support needed from friends and family. I highlighted the challenges faced by black business owners, and issue A CALL TO ACTION to help one of our own; Aisha Taylor Issah from Sistahs In Business Expo and The Sistah Shop.
The Sistah Shop is currently facing some major financial difficulties and needs our help to keep it's doors open. I encourage everyone to take action by donating, buying products, or offering their time and skills to support black-owned businesses. I also challenged myself and each of you to find organizations to donate to and to actively support black businesses through various means, such as shopping at black-owned stores or joining black-owned banks.
Think about it - if a million of us put just one dollar a month towards a Black business, that's a million dollars a month going to support our community. We've got the power to make this happen. So here's what I'm asking:
Go buy something from a Black-owned business today.
If you can, donate to a food pantry in your community.
Use a Black-owned bank.
Visit a Black-owned restaurant with your family this Sunday.
Support Black content creators - buy their books, take their courses, use their services.
Let’s come together and make a change. By supporting each other, we can achieve Financial Freedom and empower our community. Check out the new episode: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7qUG5ZbgOYZWjB5B4VgDBr?si=7cf877ae7e3e4101

Wind Down Wednesday - Why Juneteenth Matters: Education, Voting, and Community Unity
Wednesday Jun 19, 2024
Wednesday Jun 19, 2024
In today's episode, we're celebrating Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating when the last enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free, years after the Emancipation Proclamation. We have been told it was June 19, 1865 that the last slaves in America were told they were free. In 2021 it became a national holiday. However, it was the date that the last "Confederate slaves" were freed. Slaves in the Union states were not freed until the 14th amendment in December 1865. Slaves in the Indian territory were not freed until 1866.
I can't stress enough how important it is for us to celebrate and educate ourselves about our black history and heritage, not just on designated days like Juneteenth, but continuously. Our ancestors' stories, their struggles, and their triumphs should be woven into our daily lives, passed down from generation to generation.
Can you imagine being one of those enslaved people in Texas, thinking you were still bound, while the rest of the country was already free? It's a sobering thought, and it highlights the importance of education and valuing our rights, like the right to vote – a right our ancestors didn't have.
