This weekend my dude, EJ the DJ, turned 23, and I spent it one on one with him. Something about this birthday shifted things, and I had to sit down and share it with the Corner Community.
We're getting into the difference between making your kids do something and influencing them to choose it for themselves. My dad taught me that secret a long time ago: Keep Talking, Keep Talking, Keep Talking. And this weekend was about that growth. Not only Ej's growth but mine too.
I also share the Mass Mutual commercial that lives in my head, the one where the son reaches for the check and says, "I got it, Dad." That was my whole weekend right there, watching my son step up, and learning that receiving help from your child is its own kind of blessing. This one is for every parent raising kids who are coming of age, and every young person still finding their way.
